Garden  Party

Cocktail Hour and Banquet

Saturday is dress-up night!  If at all possible, dress up to match the theme of the evening; "A Garden Party as seen from the Veranda".

Garden parties have been held as social functions for generations, and have been held in small home gardens  to the magnificent gardens of palaces.  In small town Ontario, they were often held in the gardens of private homes, public parks, church gardens  or fair grounds, and may have included a box lunch auction. Even today, they are held as evidenced by the fact that in May 2007, Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper hosted one at 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa, their official residence. In May 2007, a Canadian Government Minister - Hon. Peter MacKay - was photographed speaking with HM Queen Elizabeth II at a garden party held in Ireland.  Each summer HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh host garden parties on the grounds of Buckingham Palace where hundreds of citizens are served wee sandwiches and tea in huge, open tents set up for that purpose.  Everyone dresses in summer finery with the women in smart summer dresses and large hats, and the men in suits or native costume. Wherever a garden party is held, it is always a happy, social occasion.

The 2008 Ontario Gathering Garden Party will be held in the lush, garden setting of the Lamplighter Atrium. At 6:00 p.m., the cash bar will be open for business. Come to this 'meet and greet' time for refreshments (fruit juice, water, soft drinks, wine or more exotic drinks) and admire the costumes. Judges will be choosing the most interesting costumes and prizes will be awarded to the winners. Be prepared to have a fun time!

At 7:00 p.m., you will be invited to enter the Crystal Ballroom North for our served banquet. Instead of a box lunch, you will enjoy a fine dinner.  For this meal, there will be set seating at the same tables as lunch.  Find your table, give out your table favours to your table mates, and have fun opening them.  However, don't open the souvenir or tote bag yet!  Your hostess will tell you when to do that.

After dinner, the Display Room and Artisans' Mart will open at 9:15 p.m. and close at 10:45 p.m.

The rest of the evening is your own.
